Maud Fontenoy
For over 20 years, Maud Fontenoy has fought to protect the environment, specifically the oceans and coast. An experienced adventurous sailor with many first woman exploits to her name, solo, rowing and sailing, she is Ambassador for France’s Ministry of National Education and Youth for its Sea Education programme; President of the Maud Fontenoy Foundation; former spokesperson for the UNESCO Oceanographic Commission; an expert in sustainability; a talented speaker; and author of hard-hitting books and documentaries. Her ultimate goal: to inform and raise awareness among as many people as possible about the urgent need to protect our planet.
Having spent more time in her life at sea than on land, she is tireless in her campaigns to tell people about the visible effects of pollution and global warming on the oceans that she knows so well. Supported by scientists, notably through the actions taken under the aegis of her Foundation in partnership with the French Ministry of Education, Maud is committed to educating the young generation in ways that make it easy to grasp so that sustainable development becomes accessible to all and Ecology rhymes with Economy.
All her actions, commitments and interventions are built around two key pillars: to pass on the values of hard work and perseverance and the fight for Sustainable Development.
She advises a range of different companies on this theme and advocates realistic, pragmatic ecology.

Kid Explorers
PONANT has joined forces with the Maud Fontenoy Foundation to run its Kid Explorers children’s club.
As part of its commitment to safeguarding the oceans, during your cruise PONANT offers an activity programme for children aged 4 to 13 years on all our ships, and from 6 to 13 years on board Le Commandant Charcot to familiarise them with issues related to protecting our oceans. We have special educational kits, activity sheets and themed videos all provided by the Foundation.
Every day a team of activity leaders organises creative activities (crafts, painting, etc.), fun educational workshops, board games, introduction to meditation sessions and more, as well as activities specific to the cruise itinerary and number of participants. There are also activities ashore to prolong the experience for your Kid Explorers such as walks and treasure hunts .
The activity programme is available every day. (The precise times will be provided by animators). To best meet your needs, the schedule is adapted to fit in with your cruise programme. For more information, contact the team organising the activities.
Activity schedules are posted daily in the logbook.
Every child receives a welcome kit with gifts enclosed.
-------------------------------
Activities will depend on the number and age of the children who register and the weather conditions.
Parents or guardians must read the ‘General information on the PONANT Kid Explorers Club’ and sign a form authorising the Kid Explorers Club to look after their child on board and for outings ashore.
Maud Fontenoy Foundation
Since 2008, the Maud Fontenoy Foundation has been operating in France and internationally to protect our oceans. We organise educational activities focused on the environment for the younger generation and general public, with support from scientific partners and the French Ministry of National Education. The latter has made us responsible for its Sea Education programme and relaunch of the Sea Classes initiative. Our aim is both ecological and social: to protect the ocean and save people. We start from a strong principle that protecting the environment, particularly the ocean, is a humanitarian issue that affects all mankind, without exception. For us, the oceans are a powerful force, a potential for the future. Every year, 700,000 children benefit from our programmes.

Je nach Verfügbarkeit Preis pro Person. From the pier, board your coach for a 10-minute drive to the famous Byzantine Church of Ekatontapyliani. Also named the “Lady of the hundred doors”, this church is one of the greatest early Christian monuments in Greece. The name was a creation of the 17th century scholars who wanted to compare the splendour of the church to that of the Temple of Hundred Doors (Ekatonpylon) in ancient Thebes of Egypt.
Following your visit, you will board your coach for a panoramic drive to the traditional village of Lefkes.
Lefkes is the most mountainous village of Paros and the most verdurous one. It was the first capital of Paros. The village is located under a pineforest on the hill. Follow your guide on a walking tour through its narrow streets with white walls. See the old wash-houses that are still used by some housewives, the House of Literature, the picturesque Ramnos, a street with taverns and other stores and the wonderful view: the sea and Naxos in the background. The houses are built amphitheatrical. The first residents were immigrants that came from Crete and Naoussa and locals who chose to build their village on the mountain, in order to be protected from the pirates. The town hall was built with the famous marble of Paros.
Once leaving Lefkes, you will head for the picturesque village of Naoussa. The port of Naoussa is protected by a separate fortification, the Venetian Castle. The fortification was built in the 15th century by the dynasty of Sommaripas and emerges from the sea behind the small harbour with the traditional fish boats. Today, although half sunk, the castle offers a very impressive sight worth seeing.
Before rejoining your ship, you will have some free time to stroll around its narrow streets, little squares and traditional whitewashed houses.

You will then continue to the nearby village of Naoussa, considered to be one of the prettiest in the Cyclades. Despite the development of tourism, the village has managed to keep its authenticity, its character and its charm, with its whitewashed and flowered little houses and its tiny whitewashed churches and chapels, surrounded by labyrinth-like narrow, stone-paved streets.
Your last stop will be in Parikia town, where you will visit the famous Church of a Hundred Doors. This church is the holy place of Paros and is linked to the history and myths of Byzantium.

Je nach Verfügbarkeit Preis pro Person.Take a coach tour around this island of wild beauty brimming with history and influenced by many civilisations and cultures.
You will start by visiting the monastery of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, Our Lady of the Myrtle. Constructed on a natural rocky opening in the middle of trees, it symbolises the Kytherians’ Orthodox faith. According to tradition, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found here by a shepherd, guided by a vision, in the 14th century. The church is built in the style of a three-nave basilica and you will be able to admire icons from the 17th and 18th centuries.
You will then go to the village of Mylopotamos, known as the “river of mills” because of the 22 watermills built along a small stream for grinding wheat. These days, only Phill's Watermill remains in working order. These mills are to be found in a gorge, which starts from the magnificent Fonisa waterfall. In summer, the stream above the waterfall flows from the mountain in the middle of town, near Platea Square. You will be able to quench your thirst in a cafe in the shade of the plane trees.
First you will discover Chora, the island’s striking capital, with its narrow streets, its whitewashed houses, its old residences and its Venetian buildings. You will also visit its Venetian castle, constructed in 1503; it is called “the eye of Crete” due to its strategic position overlooking the Ionian, Aegean and Cretan Seas. It has captivating views of the sea and Chora. The castle houses Kythira’s historical archives. In the surrounding area of Mesa Vourgo, you will discover some preserved churches, such as Panagia Orfani, Agios Ioannis and Agia Triada.
You will also visit the new Archaeological Museum of Chora, which contains mostly relics of the island’s prehistoric and classical eras. Je nach Verfügbarkeit Preis pro Person. From the pier, board your coach for a 75-minute drive through the fertile land of Messinia.
Second largest state of the Peloponnese in ancient times, Messinia was coveted by the Spartans who waged three wars of conquest before taking control of it. This forced the Messinians to emigrate to Italy where they founded the city of Messina. This city was the 4th century BC fortified capital of the ancient Messenians, noted in its times for its impressive military architecture. The fortified city, with its 5.5 miles (9 km) enclosing wall, was part of the strategic barrier against Sparta organized by Epaminondas. Messini was the southernmost of a chain of walled cities including Megalopolis and Argos.
Your first stop will be made at the Arcadian Gate consisting of two sets of gates separated by a rather unusual round courtyard. The inner gate has a gigantic monolithic lintel, now half fallen. The outer gate is composed by two towers (of which only the foundations remain), from which attackers were assaulted with hurled javelins or arrows.
Your next visit will be the Archaeological Museum located between the Arkadia Gate and the village of Mavromati, which displays fragments from the architecture of the site. You can admire sculptures including the marble statue of the goddess Artemis Lafrias, restored from fragments, and the six statues of the priestesses from the temple of Artemis Orthia; small bronze objects and a model of the Asklipion.
After the museum, you will proceed on foot to the Archaeological site where you will visit well-preserved ruins like the Temple of Asklipion, the Agora, the Stadium, the Gymnasium and the Ancient Theatre.
After the visit of this site, you will board your coach and return to the ship, 75-minute drive.

Je nach Verfügbarkeit Preis pro Person.Discover the Palace of Nestor, impressive Greek Antiquity remains, and the pretty little coastal town of Methoni, renowned for its fortress.
This visit begins with the ruins of King Nestor's Palace. Here you will be able to admire the room where the Queen used to take her bath, as well as the remains of what must have been a magnificent throne room with a huge hearth in its middle.
Next, you will continue on to the village of Methoni. During the 4th century B.C., Methoni was fortified and remained autonomous until the Imperial Roman era, when it enjoyed the favour of certain emperors. During the Byzantine years, it remained a remarkable port and one of the most important towns in the Peloponnese, the seat of a bishopric. Nowadays, the walls of the fortress are still impressive, although in ruins.
The Castle of Methoni occupies all the cape area and the southwestern coast up to the small islet that has also been fortified with an octagonal tower and is protected by the sea on its three sides. A deep moat separates the castle from the land and communication was achieved by a wooden bridge. The Venetians built on the ancient ramparts, completing and repairing them during the two periods when they occupied the site.
Gesamtpreis inkl. Steuern- und Gebühren : € 70
Je nach Verfügbarkeit Preis pro Person.Treat yourself to a cultural excursion with a visit to the archaeological site of the Palace of Nestor and that of the fortress of New Navarino, also known as Niokastro.
From the pier, board a coach that will take you through the verdant landscapes of the western Peloponnese to reach the vestiges of King Nestor’s palace. You will visit the room where the queen used to have her bath, as well as the remains of what must have once been a magnificent throne room with a huge hearth in its centre. The majority of the roofs and walls were built from stone and wood, but today only the stone remains.
You will proceed to Niokastro, located in the southern part of the port of Pylos. This castle was initially built by the Turks in 1573 and used as a replenishing station. Due to its strategic importance, it quickly became one of the most important fortresses in the Peloponnese during the Turkish occupation. Niokastro is one of the most well-preserved castles in Greece. Today, it houses the underwater archaeology department.

Je nach Verfügbarkeit Preis pro Person. From the pier, you will be transferred by coach to the ancient Greek town of Taormina, a 30-minute drive.
Called Tauromenium in ancient times, Taormina clings to the side of Mount Tauro and offers superb views, splashed with the vibrant colours of bougainvillea and oleanders, of the Mediterranean Sea, Isola Bella and a snow-capped Etna in the background.
A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries. It is home to theatres and a gymnasium from the Greek period, an Odeon and baths from Roman times, buildings blending Arab and Norman cultures, traces of Byzantine, and villas belonging to European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
You will start your excursion with a visit on foot to the historic centre. You will cross the famous Corso Umberto to discover numerous monuments from several eras, and admire Porta Catania, the Cathedral, Piazza IX Aprile and Palazzo Corvaja.
You will then arrive at Teatro Antico, a theatre built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and almost completely rebuilt by the Romans who created a gladiatorial arena. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. Due to its size and acoustic quality the theatre is still used to host festivals and concerts. Seated on the stone terraces, the audience can enjoy the concert while admiring a breath-taking panoramic view of the sea, Mount Tauro and Etna.
After your visit, you will enjoy a refreshment at a local bar and some free time.

But, of course, the major attractions are the crater and the remnants of the awe-inspiring streams of lava.
From there and with the assistance of a professional alpine guide, you will continue by cable car to 7,500 ft and then by special 4x4 minibuses to reach the basis of the main crater at about 8,800 ft above sea level. Up there and still accompanied with your guide, you will be able to go nearer to see last lava flows.

You will then reboard your coach and drive to Viagrande. Situated on a hill on the slopes of Mount Etna, this village was made famous in “Nedda”, the first novel from Sicilian writer Giovanni Verga. However, this village is also known for its vineyards and especially for its gastronomic traditions.
Upon your arrival, you will proceed to the typical 18th century Sicilian home of gastronomic journalist Eleonora Consoli, la “Cucina del Sole”. Author of several books on Italian and Sicilian cooking and recipient of numerous awards, she established this cooking school, where her daughter, Monica, is now continuing the family tradition and hosting guests.

Also named the “Lady of the hundred doors”, this church is one of the greatest early Christian monuments in Greece. Following your visit, you will board your coach for a panoramic drive to the traditional village of Lefkes.
Lefkes is the most mountainous village of Paros and the most verdurous one. It was the first capital of Paros. The village is located under a pineforest on the hill. See the old wash-houses that are still used by some housewives, the House of Literature, the picturesque Ramnos, a street with taverns and other stores and the wonderful view: the sea and Naxos in the background. Today, although half sunk, the castle offers a very impressive sight worth seeing.
Before rejoining your ship, you will have some free time to stroll around its narrow streets, little squares and traditional whitewashed houses.

Next, you will continue on to the village of Methoni.

A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries.
