Zunächst legt Ihr Schiff in Sorrente an, einer charmanten, bunten Stadt hoch auf den Felsen. Sie bietet eine wunderschöne Aussicht auf den Golf von Neapel. Weiter südlich entdecken Sie Amalfi und seine Küste. Die zwischen Himmel und Meer gelegene Stadt und die umliegenden kleinen Ortschaften sind wahre Kleinode, die zum UNESCO-Welterbe gehören.
Erleben Sie das wunderschöne Schauspiel des noch aktiven Vulkans Stromboli, der in regelmäßigen Abständen Lavaströme ausstößt. Etwas weiter, Lipari, die Hauptinsel der vulkanischen Liparischen Inseln. Sie ist insbesondere für ihre zahlreichen natürlichen und architektonischen Schönheiten berühmt.
Nach einem Aufenthalt in der Hafenstadt Catania, deren Bauwerke im Stil des italienischen Spätbarocks sich am Fuße des Ätna erstrecken, entdecken Sie Valletta, die ehemalige Hochburg des Ritterordens. Die maltesische Hauptstadt, die zum UNESCO-Welterbe zählt, beherbergt zahlreiche historische Stätten: die St. Johns Co-Kathedrale, den Großmeisterpalast und die Kirche Unsere Jungfrau vom Siege, die Kirche der Hl. Katharina sowie die Jesuitenkirche.
Die Fahrt geht weiter, und Sie entdecken Syrakus, eine der schönsten Städte Siziliens, die aufgrund ihrer zahlreichen historischen Bauwerke ins UNESCO-Welterbe aufgenommen wurde.
Ihre Reise endet in Palermo, der Hauptstadt Siziliens, wo Sie die Wahrzeichen der Insel wie die Kathedrale aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, besuchen können.

Valentina Lisitsa
Valentina Lisitsa is not only the first « YouTube star » of classical music; more importantly, she is the first classical artist to have converted her internet success into a global concert career in the principal venues of Europe, the US, South America and Asia.
Born in Kiev, Valentina started learning the piano at age three and gave her first public recital a year later. She graduated from Kiev Conservatory and gave her debut performance in New York in 1995.
Thanks to an unwavering dedication towards her audience and personal approach to videos, her YouTube channel currently records over 600.000 subscribers and 240 million views. This singular success has led Valentina to perform at some of the world’s most prestigious stages which included a spectacular recital in London's Royal Albert Hall before an audience of 8000 in June 2012 that sealed her international breakthrough.
Valentina has released 9 albums for Decca. Her latest was released in February 2019, for the 125th anniversary of Tchaikovsky’s death: the most complete collection of works for solo piano by Tchaikovsky, some works had never been recorded before. The 2019/2020 season sees Valentina perform recitals in Istanbul, Moscow, Zurich… and a return to Madison and Amelia Island Chamber Music Festivals in the US. Highlights of the past seasons include amongst others a sold-out concert at Auditorio Nacional with the Spanish National Orchestra, where Valentina played all piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergej Rachmaninoff in one evening.

Laure Favre-Kahn
After studying piano at the Avignon Conservatoire, at the age of 17 Laure Favre-Kahn was unanimously awarded a Premier Prix at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSM).
At 20, she recorded her first album dedicated to Schumann’s works, followed a year later by a Chopin CD.
Since then, she has regularly performed in France and abroad as a soloist and chamber musician, in particular with violinist Nemanja Radulovic. Laure has participated at major festivals and as a guest with numerous orchestras, while continuing to make recordings.
She can be heard regularly on France Musique, Radio Classique and France Inter. In 2001 she won first prize at the International Pro Piano Competition in New York, returning to the city the following year to make a recording and do a recital in Carnegie Hall.
In 2013, Laure Favre-Kahn created her own show at the Avignon Festival called ‘Chopin Confidences’ where she pays tribute to the composer, alone on stage, with the voice of Charles Berling.
Her 12th album, Vers la flamme was released by Naive in 2017 to unanimous praise by the press.

Dimitri Naïditch
A renowned pianist on the French and European music scene, as passionate about the classical repertoire as he is about jazz, Dimitri Naïditch is “one of those extraordinary musicians whose talent brims over the pigeon holes imposed by the system” (Olivier Bellamy). With a dazzling technique that combines a rare sensitivity and extraordinary power, he has unmistakable charisma.
An outstanding classical pianist (four First Prizes at the Kiev Conservatoire and several international Grand Prix), he is also a bona fide jazz musician and has been for over 30 years. Dimitri Naïditch has travelled the world performing solo, with symphony orchestras and alongside Didier Lockwood, Patricia Petibon, Richard Galliano, Marie-Claude Pietragalla, Gilles Apap, Pierre Amoyal, Rick Margitza, Mario Stantchev, Stefano Di Battista, Andy Sheppard, Buffo-Howard Buten, Jean-Jacques Avenel, Thierry Elliez, Nicolas Dautricourt… The list is long.
Straddling as he does the classical and jazz worlds, Dimitri Naïditch has carved an idiosyncratic path where the interpretation of classical texts, “decomposition” work and the jubilant freedom of improvisation are in harmony.
Author of many of his own creations, he is embarking on a series of programmes revisiting the masters: Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Far from being a simple jazzed-up reinterpretation, Dimitri Naïditch invites us on an exciting journey into the heart of classic masterpieces, which he handles with love and respect to give a new perspective. An inspired composer, he wrote Concerto for piano and nostalgia for the original soundtrack of Claude Lelouch’s film Chacun sa vie.
Founded in 2012, the Trio comprising Dimitri Naïditch (piano), Gilles Naturel (double bass) and Arthur Alard (drums) have performed at Palazzo Farnese in Rome, Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Théâtre du Châtelet, Lyon’s Auditorium, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Théâtre de la Gaîté in Montparnasse and at Lisztomanias in Châteauroux.

Alexandre Kantorow
At 22 years old, Alexandre Kantorow is the first French pianist to win the gold medal at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition as well as the Grand Prix.
Whether it’s a concert or a disc, the critics are giving Alexandre Kantorow rave reviews. Hailed by the press as the “young tsar” of the French piano, he started performing very early. At 16, he was invited to play for “La Folle Journée” in Nantes and Warsaw with the Sinfonia Varsovia and since then he has played with many orchestras. He performs regularly with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra.
Alexandre has played at major concert halls such as the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Philharmonie de Paris, Bozar in Brussels and also at the most prestigious festivals including la Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins, Heidelberg etc.
His BIS recording ‘À la russe’ (BIS-2150) has won many awards and distinctions including Choc de l’Année (Classica), Diapason découverte (Diapason), Supersonic (Pizzicato) and CD des Doppelmonats (PianoNews). For BIS he has also recorded piano concertos by Liszt (BIS-2100) and Saint-Saëns (BIS-2300), and a recital including rhapsodies by Brahms, Bartók and Liszt (in preparation). His last recording of Saint-Saëns has received Diapason d’Or & Choc Classica of the year.
In 2019, he was named “Musical Revelation of the Year” by the Professional Critics Association.
In 2020, he has been awarded two “Victoires de la Musique Classique”: recording of the year (Saint Saëns concerto n°3, 4 & 5) and instrumental soloist of the year.
Alexandre has studied with Pierre-Alain Volondat, Igor Lazko, Franck Braley and Rena Shereshevskaya.
Alexandre is a laureate of the Safran foundation and Banque Populaire.

Alain Duault
The novelist, poet, journalist, musicologist and radio and television presenter Alain Duault has been sharing his passion for and knowledge of classical music for more than 30 years. Considered to be one of the greatest opera specialists in France he is now President of the Prix Pelléas jury, and has been made an Officier de la Légion d’Honneur and Commandeur des Arts et Lettres.
Alain Duault studied literature, philosophy and psycho-analysis in Paris, then musicology and piano. His first TV appearance was as a guest of Bernard Pivot for his book of poems, Colorature. This led to a number of radio programmes dedicated to classical music, notably on RTL, the radio station where Alain Duault would be “Mr Classical Music” for 22 years, before joining Radio Classique with daily slots until 2018. A role that he also took on for the France 3 television channel, presenting a number of exceptional programmes (masterclasses with Ruggero Raimondi in the Salle Gaveau, Musiques en fête at the Chorégies d’Orange festival…).
In 1999, he conceived and presented Intégrale Chopin (225 works, 60 pianists), broadcast on France 3. Then in 2001, he wrote and performed an ambitious and very popular show, Verdi, une passion, un destin (with Jean Piat and 250 musicians). In the wake of this success, he wrote and performed two other shows: Victor Hugo, la légende d’un siècle in 2002 and Rencontre avec George Sand (with Marie-Christine Barrault) in 2004 and 2005.
Alain Duault also puts his writing skills to the service of classical music. The author of a number of books, including Dans la peau de Maria Callas, (Le Passeur Éditeur, 2014, pocket edition, 2017), Dictionnaire amoureux illustré de l’Opéra (Plon Gründ, 2016), Ce léger rien des choses qui ont fui, poetry (Gallimard, 2017), he also writes editorials for Classica.

David Bismuth
Named one of the ten most gifted pianists of his generation by « Pianiste » magazine, David Bismuth has been praised by critics for the brilliance and depth of his performances, which combine the science of architecture and the poetry of his timbre.
Recently, two new albums came to enrich his discography: the first for solo piano, dedicated to "Beethoven and his masters", published by AmeSon ('' ffff '' of Télérama). The second, "Paris 1900" in duet with the violinist Geneviève Laurenceau, published by Naïve.
David Bismuth made his orchestral debut in Russia under the direction of Yuri Bashmet, and at the Philharmonie de Paris with the Orchestre Pasdeloup. In 2020, David Bismuth will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven, notably at the Philharmonie de Paris and at Carnegie Hall in New York.
In the past few seasons, Bismuth has performed with the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, under renowned conductors such as Andris Nelsons, Jaap van Zweden, Jean-Christophe Spinosi…

The Piano Festival at Sea has become something of a tradition in the PONANT music season and every year hosts stars and revelations of this “King of Instruments”. The principle remains the same: every evening a solo recital by each pianist before dinner (so we can comment on them during the meal) and on the last evening a musical fireworks display for the ears by all the artists in the Festival.
This year we will be discovering the superb Ukrainian pianist Valentina Lisitsa, known as the “Rachmaninov queen”, and the virtuoso Alexandre Kantorow dubbed “the young piano Tsar” and who at 21 has already performed on all the world’s big stages. Then we have French romantic pianist Laure Favre-Kahn, Beethoven specialist David Bismuth, and providing the contrast jazz pianist Dimitri Naïditch, Ukrainian like Valentina Lisitsa with whom he may even attempt a four-hander.

Herculaneum was founded by the Greeks and was named after Hercules, the Greek god. Later it became a Roman city, and in 79 A.D., it met its demise when Mt. Vesuvius erupted. Herculaneum was buried under approximately 50 feet of mud and ash, and it stayed buried for more than 1,600 years until 1709 when sewage workers digging a well accidentally discovered it.
Today, only parts of the ancient city have been excavated, lying virtually underneath the modern cities of Ercolano and Portici. The excavation site is surprisingly well preserved. Due to the wind direction and the timing of the eruption, the buildings filled up with the ash-mud mixture instead of caving in structures, which helped to preserve the city.
Your guided walking tour will take you through wealthy Roman villas with portico gardens, fountains and baths. The highlights include stunning wall frescoes and intricate floor mosaics.
Afterwards, you will re-board your coach and drive back to your ship.

From Amalfi harbour, you will reach Ravello by coach after a 40-minute drive following the narrow main road which stretches along the side of rocky cliffs, overlooking the sea. Every twist and turn of the road offer new and breathtaking views on the world famous Sorrentine peninsula. You will see the rocks rising out of the sea like strange mythological creatures and the small boats in sheltered sandy coves that look like brightly coloured toys from up above.
Ravello is a small city of ancient origins which faces a range of hills overlooking the clear blue sea of the gulf of Salerno. The beauties of this area have inspired poets, painters and musicians during its millennia-old history.
On arrival you will be visiting Villa Rufolo where Wagner stayed. The magical beauties of its gardens and the architecture of the cloisters inspired him for “the Garden of Klingsor”. You will also admire the numerous arches and antique towers as well as the Cathedral, outside visit only.
After a short free time to browse and shop around, you will drive back to Amalfi.

From the pier, board your motor-launch for a scenic cruise to Positano, the prettiest town along the coast where white Moorish style houses cling to the slopes around a small sparkling bay. In 1953 when writer John Steinbeck lived here, the town was a forgotten fishing village, loved by artists. It became a retreat for the wealthy and is now a popular resort area. Enjoy some free time to explore Positano and its quaint boutiques that sell the casual, locally made cotton clothing the town is noted for.
At the end of the visit, you will re-board your boat for a ride to the enchanting village of Amalfi, which has a Spanish flavour, its white houses sitting on the rocks facing a bright blue bay. Flanked by an old Saracen tower and a 12th-century Capuchin monastery, Amalfi boasts a cathedral dating from the 11th century that is covered with geometrical designs in coloured stones. Your guide then will take you to view St. Andrew’s Cathedral and will offer an introduction to the town so that you make the best use of some free time to explore on your own.

Amalfi & the Emerald Grotto

Discovered in 1932, explorers found a unique cave formation stretching 30 metres (100 feet) high by 60 metres (200 feet) wide, hidden along the coastline. The most fascinating aspect of this cave is the underwater entrance 12 metres (30 feet) deep that allows the sunlight to enter the cave, creating a luminescent Emerald Glow.

Panorama of the Aeolian Islands

Lipari is the largest and most populated of the Aeolian Islands. Famous since olden times for its obsidian quarries, the town and port are dominated by a citadel, testimony to the archipelago’s strategic importance in the past.
Leaving from the port by coach you will take a tour of the island. Your first stop stop is the Quattrocchi viewpoint, one of the archipelago’s most striking panoramas. Here you can admire the volcanic peaks of Jacopo and Perciato, against a backdrop of Vulcano Island. There are also other good spots to see the island of Salina, the pumice stone quarries and the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow.
The coach then heads to the centre of Lipari where your excursion will continue on foot. Lipari’s historic centre is dominated by a Castle built on the promontory. Its construction dates back to ancient times, with a tower forming part of Greek fortifications of the 4th and 5th centuries BC, medieval towers from the 13th century, and surrounding walls from the Spanish period. Inside there are numerous archaeological remains as well as the Norman Cathedral Saint Bartolomeo (only outside visit) dating from 1084 and which has a Baroque facade. In a local pizzeria, the owner will show you how to make this world famous national dish and give you the chance to realise your own pizza and personalise it with your favourite ingredients. Taormina & the ancient theatre

From the pier, you will be transferred by coach to the ancient Greek town of Taormina, a 1-hour drive.
Called Tauromenium in ancient times, Taormina clings to the side of Mount Tauro and offers superb views, splashed with the vibrant colours of bougainvillea and oleanders, of the Mediterranean Sea, Isola Bella and a snow-capped Etna in the background.
A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries. It is home to theatres and a gymnasium from the Greek period, an Odeon and baths from Roman times, buildings blending Arab and Norman cultures, traces of Byzantine, and villas belonging to European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
You start your excursion with a visit on foot to the historic centre. You will cross the famous Corso Umberto to discover numerous monuments from several eras, and admire Porta Catania, the Cathedral, Piazza IX Aprile and Palazzo Corvaja.
You then arrive at Teatro Antico, a theatre built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and almost completely rebuilt by the Romans who created a gladiatorial arena. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. Due to its size and acoustic quality the theatre is still used to host festivals and concerts. Seated on the stone terraces, the audience can enjoy the concert while admiring a breath-taking panoramic view of the sea, Mount Tauro and Etna.

From the pier, you will board your coach and start your 1-hour and 15 minutes panoramic drive to Acireale.
You will drive along the Ionian Sea on the famous “Cyclops Riviera” with the “Faraglioni” rocks and pass by the village of Aci Castello with its Norman Castle of black lava, and the small fishing village of Aci Trezza.
After a brief photo stop, you will return towards Catania and enjoy a short sightseeing tour of the city centre: Piazza Verga, Via Etnea, Villa Bellini, Piazza Stesicoro.

This overland must be pre-booked and prepaid at least 60 days prior to your cruise. Any reservation made after this deadline will be confirmed on board based on availability. From the pier, board a private coach for the scenic 45-minute drive along the spectacular Amalfi Coast to Positano. The narrow road winds along rocky seaside cliffs and offers breathtaking views of the Italian Riviera. Marvel at the rocks rising from the sea and keep an eye out for the small boats in sheltered sandy coves that look like brightly-coloured toys from above.
Upon arrival in the Positano minibus parking, a short walk will lead you to the city’s centre. Following a brief introductory tour, continue exploring on your own or browse the designer boutiques, souvenir shops and art galleries found along the main street and some narrow alleys.
Once a small fishing village, Positano is now the star attraction of the entire Amalfi coast. White Moorish style houses cling to the slopes around a small, sparkling bay. A 90-minute visit will allow you to take in the unique setting and special ambience of Positano. At the appointed time, rejoin your guide and proceed to the local shuttle bus for the drive up the hill. Once the group has assembled at the top, a mini-coach will collect you for the brief drive to the legendary San Pietro Hotel.
Located a short distance south of Positano, the hotel takes its name from a cliff-side chapel. Here, in this ultimate secluded spot frequented by the most discerning clientele, a three-course gastronomic lunch awaits you.
Leaving the hotel, return to Amalfi where you can choose to return directly to the pier or remain in the city centre to continue your exploration and return to the ship later.
- Positano’s main city centre is pedestrian-only, and involves downhill and uphill walking over uneven surfaces, with stairs to negotiate. However, walking is at guests’ discretion during the free time in Positano. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself from the sun. In case the San Pietro Hotel is not available on particular dates, lunch will be served at another 5-star hotel in Positano. Due to the nature of the Amalfi Drive, this tour operates in compact mini-buses; air-conditioning may not be as effective as in large coaches, and several trips may be necessary to assemble the group. Children under 12 years old are not allowed on this tour.

Herculaneum

From the pier, you will board your coach and be transferred to another victim of the fiery temper of Mt. Vesuvius: Herculaneum.
Herculaneum was founded by the Greeks and was named after Hercules, the Greek god. Later it became a Roman city, and in 79 A.D., it met its demise when Mt. Vesuvius erupted. Herculaneum was buried under approximately 50 feet of mud and ash, and it stayed buried for more than 1,600 years until 1709 when sewage workers digging a well accidentally discovered it.
Today, only parts of the ancient city have been excavated, lying virtually underneath the modern cities of Ercolano and Portici. The excavation site is surprisingly well preserved. Due to the wind direction and the timing of the eruption, the buildings filled up with the ash-mud mixture instead of caving in structures, which helped to preserve the city.
Your guided walking tour will take you through wealthy Roman villas with portico gardens, fountains and baths. The highlights include stunning wall frescoes and intricate floor mosaics.

From Amalfi harbour, you will reach Ravello by coach after a 40-minute drive following the narrow main road which stretches along the side of rocky cliffs, overlooking the sea. Every twist and turn of the road offer new and breathtaking views on the world famous Sorrentine peninsula. You will see the rocks rising out of the sea like strange mythological creatures and the small boats in sheltered sandy coves that look like brightly coloured toys from up above.
Ravello is a small city of ancient origins which faces a range of hills overlooking the clear blue sea of the gulf of Salerno. The beauties of this area have inspired poets, painters and musicians during its millennia-old history.
On arrival you will be visiting Villa Rufolo where Wagner stayed. The magical beauties of its gardens and the architecture of the cloisters inspired him for “the Garden of Klingsor”. You will also admire the numerous arches and antique towers as well as the Cathedral, outside visit only.
After a short free time to browse and shop around, you will drive back to Amalfi.

From the pier, board your motor-launch for a scenic cruise to Positano, the prettiest town along the coast where white Moorish style houses cling to the slopes around a small sparkling bay. In 1953 when writer John Steinbeck lived here, the town was a forgotten fishing village, loved by artists. It became a retreat for the wealthy and is now a popular resort area. Enjoy some free time to explore Positano and its quaint boutiques that sell the casual, locally made cotton clothing the town is noted for.
At the end of the visit, you will re-board your boat for a ride to the enchanting village of Amalfi, which has a Spanish flavour, its white houses sitting on the rocks facing a bright blue bay. Flanked by an old Saracen tower and a 12th-century Capuchin monastery, Amalfi boasts a cathedral dating from the 11th century that is covered with geometrical designs in coloured stones. Your guide then will take you to view St. Andrew’s Cathedral and will offer an introduction to the town so that you make the best use of some free time to explore on your own.

Amalfi & the Emerald Grotto

From the pier, you will board a motor launch to reach the astonishing and colourful Grotta dello Smeraldo (the Emerald grotto) not far from the Amalfi centre. Enjoy the beauty of the Amalfi coast by cruising to the grotto and once there, on board local boats, experience the emotion of such a suggestive natural spot with its shining emerald green shades.
Discovered in 1932, explorers found a unique cave formation stretching 30 metres (100 feet) high by 60 metres (200 feet) wide, hidden along the coastline. The most fascinating aspect of this cave is the underwater entrance 12 metres (30 feet) deep that allows the sunlight to enter the cave, creating a luminescent Emerald Glow.
At the end of the visit, your launch will drive you back to Amalfi to drop you off in the main square where you will visit the impressive Cathedral of the town and spend some time to browse around and taste local specialities like the Limoncello Liquor.

Panorama of the Aeolian Islands

Lipari is the largest and most populated of the Aeolian Islands. Famous since olden times for its obsidian quarries, the town and port are dominated by a citadel, testimony to the archipelago’s strategic importance in the past.
Leaving from the port by coach you will take a tour of the island. Your first stop stop is the Quattrocchi viewpoint, one of the archipelago’s most striking panoramas. Here you can admire the volcanic peaks of Jacopo and Perciato, against a backdrop of Vulcano Island. There are also other good spots to see the island of Salina, the pumice stone quarries and the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow.
The coach then heads to the centre of Lipari where your excursion will continue on foot. Lipari’s historic centre is dominated by a Castle built on the promontory. Its construction dates back to ancient times, with a tower forming part of Greek fortifications of the 4th and 5th centuries BC, medieval towers from the 13th century, and surrounding walls from the Spanish period. Inside there are numerous archaeological remains as well as the Norman Cathedral Saint Bartolomeo (only outside visit) dating from 1084 and which has a Baroque facade. Taormina & the ancient theatre

From the pier, you will be transferred by coach to the ancient Greek town of Taormina, a 1-hour drive.
Called Tauromenium in ancient times, Taormina clings to the side of Mount Tauro and offers superb views, splashed with the vibrant colours of bougainvillea and oleanders, of the Mediterranean Sea, Isola Bella and a snow-capped Etna in the background.
A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries. It is home to theatres and a gymnasium from the Greek period, an Odeon and baths from Roman times, buildings blending Arab and Norman cultures, traces of Byzantine, and villas belonging to European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
You start your excursion with a visit on foot to the historic centre. You will cross the famous Corso Umberto to discover numerous monuments from several eras, and admire Porta Catania, the Cathedral, Piazza IX Aprile and Palazzo Corvaja.
You then arrive at Teatro Antico, a theatre built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and almost completely rebuilt by the Romans who created a gladiatorial arena. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. Due to its size and acoustic quality the theatre is still used to host festivals and concerts. Seated on the stone terraces, the audience can enjoy the concert while admiring a breath-taking panoramic view of the sea, Mount Tauro and Etna.

Catania & Cyclops riviera

From the pier, you will board your coach and start your 1-hour and 15 minutes panoramic drive to Acireale.
You will drive along the Ionian Sea on the famous “Cyclops Riviera” with the “Faraglioni” rocks and pass by the village of Aci Castello with its Norman Castle of black lava, and the small fishing village of Aci Trezza.
After a brief photo stop, you will return towards Catania and enjoy a short sightseeing tour of the city centre: Piazza Verga, Via Etnea, Villa Bellini, Piazza Stesicoro.
Stop near the Cathedral square and start the walking tour of the city centre: Piazza del Duomo, the central square with the elephant’s fountain and the Cathedral (outside visit) originally built by the Normans with its finely made choir stalls.
Following your short walking tour, you will enjoy some free time to browse the shops at your leisure before re-boarding your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Archaeological site & Ortygia

Depart the pier by coach and drive to the archaeological area, which you will reach after a short drive.
Visit the Roman Amphitheatre of Augustus, used for fights between gladiators and wild beasts, the Altar of Hieron, constructed in the 2nd century BC to celebrate the “Eleutherian Feast”, the Latomie of Paradise, huge caverns once used as prisons, the Ear of Dionysius, an enormous grotto with extraordinary echo and the Greek Theatre, one of the largest in the Hellenic World, constructed in the 5th century BC and successively enlarged.
Upon completion of the visit, re-board your coach for the short drive to Ortygia, which you will visit on foot. On Ortygia Island discover the Piazza Pancali (the ruins of the Temple of Apollo of the 6th century BC), Corso Matteotti, Archimede’s Place, Piazza Duomo. Visit the Cathedral in Baroque style, erected over the remains of the Doric Temple of Minerva: in the interiors, see the undamaged twelve Doric columns. Then visit the fountain of Arethusa, the nymph praised by Pindar and Virgilio in one of the most touching and fine myths. Several nobility palaces – majority of them originating in the 15th and 16th centuries – will be seen from outside during the walking tour.
Then, return to the port and your ship.

Day 1—Palermo
After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local representative.
You will go through the crowded, scenic streets of the old town. Its unique Byzantin-Saracen-Norman architecture is a fascinating blend of this rich and remarkably multicultural heritage.
You will go by the impressive Cathedral and then visit the Palatine Chapel, inside the Norman Castle “Palazzo dei Normanni” which is today the seat of the Sicilian government.
The Chapel, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is a masterpiece of Arabo-Norman art, well-known for its golden and coloured mosaics.
Lunch will be served at the “Casa del Brodo” restaurant, a typical Sicilian restaurant located in the city centre.
Then you will walk back to the coach and travel from Palermo to Monreale (a drive of about 8 km) to visit the famous Cathedral, said to be the most beautiful Norman Church in Italy, designed and completed by William the Good in 1174. With its thick walls and massive towers, Monreale’s exterior looks like an austere fortress. It is the interior of this great Cathedral which is its crowning glory. The large nave with its side aisles and grey granite columns sets off the exquisite Byzantine mosaics on the walls above the arches. You will also visit the Benedictine cloister; the courtyard is enclosed by an arcade supported by 216 sets of twin columns, each with a different design and richly decorated capitals.
Afterwards you will return to downtown and go to the hotel.
